In 1935, Indiana Jones is delivering the remains of Nurhachi, an ancient Chinese emperor, to a gangster named Lao Che in exchange for a large diamond. Lao tries to poison Indy, but chaos ensues, leading to a running gun battle and pursuit by Lao Che and his henchmen. Indy escapes with nightclub singer Willie Scott and his young sidekick Short Round.

The trio lands in India, where they are asked by desperate villagers to find a sacred stone and rescue their children from a Thuggee cult. The Thuggee are a secret society of criminals and murderers who worship the goddess Kali. They have kidnapped the children and stolen the Sankara stone, a mystical object that can control the weather.

Indy, Willie, and Short Round travel to Pankot Palace, where the Thuggee are based. They infiltrate the palace and discover that the children are being held captive in the mines. Indy also learns that the Thuggee are planning to use the Sankara stone to cause a drought, which will allow them to take control of the region.

Indy and his companions must race against time to rescue the children, stop the Thuggee, and retrieve the Sankara stone. Along the way, they face many dangers, including booby traps, human sacrifices, and a high-speed mine cart chase.

In the end, Indy and his friends defeat the Thuggee and rescue the children. They also retrieve the Sankara stone and return it to the villagers.
