In a crime-ridden Johannesburg, South Africa, Deon Wilson (Dev Patel), a brilliant engineer, creates a revolutionary AI programme. He installs it into a decommissioned police robot named Chappie (voiced by Sharlto Copley), granting it the ability to think and feel for itself.

Chappie is stolen by three gangsters: Ninja (Ninja), Yo-Landi (Yolandi Visser), and Amerika (Jose Pablo Cantillo). They treat him like their own child, teaching him about the world and nurturing his curiosity. Chappie forms a close bond with Yo-Landi, who becomes his surrogate mother.

However, Chappie's existence poses a threat to Vincent Moore (Hugh Jackman), Deon's rival at the robotics company. Vincent has developed his own line of combat robots and sees Chappie as a dangerous anomaly. He attempts to capture and dismantle Chappie, putting him and his newfound family in grave danger.
